Jehovah Shalom

5. Jehovah Shalom (Judges 6:24)

Jehovah Shalom means Lord our Peace. Peace is the inheritance Jesus gave to His disciples before He left this world. His last message before facing Calvary was “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.” This peace is different from the peace found in this world. When all situations are favourable and when there are no problems the people of this world enjoy peace. But the peace which Jesus gives is inner peace irrespective of the situations or surroundings, which nothing on earth or no one can give or take away. It is a peace of God when a person finds peace with God and peace in God. Storms may rage around. But His peace is great and sufficient to face all circumstances.

Gideon was an industrious but a timid person. He was threshing wheat alone in a vineyard because of enemies. Angel of God came to him personally and called him specially to become a liberator of His people. God addressed as a mighty man of valour. This is what the Lord was going to execute in His life. He sees things even before they are executed. God never sees us as what we are but what we would be when we are totally surrendered to His will. Moses was broken in body and spirit when he met Lord in Mount Horeb, but Lord saw him as an able administrator, the only one whom He could trust to be His chosen leader. When Joseph spent his first years in his father’s house Lord saw him as an exalted leader over others and gave him revelation to that effect. When Saul was persecuting Christians Lord saw him as a chosen vessel willing to suffer for him.

When Gideon was called by Lord he gave a great challenge.”Where is God who has helped us in the past?” Only those who have such challenging faith can be used by Lord to perform great miracles for Lord. Gideon when called was humble enough to admit his inability and insufficiency. But God promised him victory.

Gideon offered a small present to his visitor not realising it was the angel of God. When fire came from the rock burned his offering, he realised that his visitor was none but God Himself. He was greatly afraid that he would die. Then and there God strengthened him and offered him His peace – Jehovah shalom. Gideon named that place Jehovah Shalom and built an altar there. LORD JEHOVAH is the only God who offers peace and who is the embodiment of peace. Peace is the first and lasting experience of anyone who accepts Lord.

When we come face to face with the holiness and greatness of God we may be consumed because He is a consuming fire. We were to be consumed, but the chastisement of our peace was upon Him. We are at peace with Him only because of Jesus. (Ephesians 2: 14) Jesus is the Peace who broke the middle wall of partition between us and God. Yes He is our peace.
