The Names of our God

Jehovah: The Eternal - I AM THAT I AM

We all know the story of Moses; how he was born, how he was saved from water and was raised up as a prince in Pharaoh’s palace, how he was compelled to run away and lived in Midian as a shepherd etc. He ran away from homeland when he was forty years old. He had long forgotten his dream of delivering Israelites from slavery. But God did not forget. He was watching Moses all these years. When he was eighty years old he came upon burning bush in Horeb accidentally and there he met the living God.

God called him specially for His purpose ie to deliver Israelites from slavery. Moses was in a confusing situation. There was a time when he was all ablaze for this mission. But now he was content to end his life in the desert as a shepherd without any other complications. He had once thought that the purpose of his privileged life was to deliver his brothers. Now those fanciful days were over. Now after all these years when he is an old man weak in strength and vigour God was calling him for a mission he did not want to fulfil. His only desire now is to die in this foreign land. But God rejected all his arguments. He was really forcing Moses against his will.

This time Moses was not prepared to take any risks. He was afraid of people’s reaction to his claim that God had sent him for their deliverance. He further asked God what to reply when they asked the name of the God who sent him.. These people were suffering for centuries with hard labour. Finer things and higher thoughts were absent in their life. Moses was well aware that if he suddenly came to them and talked about a delivering God, they will reject his message. So he asked Lord what he should say when they ask the name of the Lord who sent him to them. To this genuine question God gave a beautiful answer.

“I am what I Am” is my name. In other words, God revealed Himself as the Alpha and the Omega. (Revelation :1:8) None has ever tried or can ever try to find out the mystery of His Beginning and End. He is the Eternal who always has been and who always will be.(Psalms: 90: 1,2) The God is the God of all generations. Even before the mountains, earth and the universe were formed He is God from Everlasting to Everlasting. He is the everpresent and the living one. He came to this world as Jesus. Jesus told “Even before Abraham was I AM.” (John 8: 58) “Therefore my Father loves me because I lay down my life that Imay take it again. No one takes it from Me but I lay it down for Myself. I have power to lay it down andIhave power to take it again.” (John10: 17,18) Yes, our God is Jehovah the I Am What I Am.
